Same here. Never heard you weren't supposed to do that. What about stainless steel utensils? Never had problems with those either.

i thought it was the nonstick teflon coated stuff that wasn't supposed to be put in the dishwasher. not stainless.

No one has pointed out that stainless steel is dishwasher safe.

You're not? We usually put them in DW. I have not noticed any spotting. I agree with the PP - pots are for cooking not for some Martha Stewart photo shoot!

I have never heard this for the all stainless All-Clad pieces (can't speak to Calphalon). In fact, their site states:

It is recommended that before you use your Stainless Steel All-Clad you wash it in the dishwasher first to remove any manufacturing residues and this will help to keep it shiny. Do not put your non-stick cookware in the dishwasher because high heat and harsh detergents will corrode and dry out the surface. Copper-Core’ can be put in the dishwasher but it may result in some tarnishing of the copper band around the exterior. I have put most of mine in the dishwasher regularly for at least 15 years and have not had spots or any discoloration. To help with stuck-on food, or if I don't have time to soak, Bon Ami, Bar Keepers Friend or even plain baking soda all work wonders.

Me, too. My All-Clad is 9 years old and still looks great. I bought it to replace my old Calphalon anodized specifically because I could put it in the dishwasher. I hate hand washing dishes.

I like PP's attitude. They're for cooking, not decoration.

That said, when mine were brand new I listened to that stuff, and got in the habit of handwashing them. And I'm still handwashing them. Habits are hard to break, and they take up so much room in the dishwasher.

They hardly look pristine, though. For all my effort, they probably look about the same as PP's.

I don't give a fuck and all of my stainless looks fine. No spots, discoloration, etc. The finish is the same as the day I bought it, except for normal wear from use.

Permanent spots on the stainless steel.

They are still functional, just spotted.

I have All-Clad and some Cephalon pans (all stainless -- I have NO non-stick pans). It says they should be hand-washed. Is it bad to sometimes put them in the dishwasher? will i ruin them? Why does it say this?
