Absolutely Cape May. There is so much to do aside from the beach (which is still fun to walk on even when too cold to swim). You can climb the lighthouse, walk nature trails, visit the Nature Center, Physick Estate, Cold Spring Village, ride bikes on the boardwalk, and walk the outdoor mall. There are restaurants open and stuff going on. Cape May had no damage from Sandy. And it is not Yuck, whatever some snobby reporter's wife says about it. It's adorable and quaint and a great place to visit.

I agree Cape May is fine, both in terms of no damage from Sandy and that it's a fine place to visit. I actually prefer Lewes, because it is small and quaint. There is a lot open in the off-season, and you can easily go to Rehoboth as well. If you have enough time, you could also take the ferry to Cape May for one day.

I would consider Rehoboth DE over Lewes-- a bigger beach town than Lewes, lots of boutique shopping/restaurants, and some of the boardwalk shops might open after St Patricks Day too. You can look at Jacklingo.com for Rehoboth rentals, it has a calendar and you can plug in your dates and you can look for a house walking distance to the beach/shops. But Cape May is probably "quainter" than Rehoboth, but Rehoboth is closer to get to.

I don't know what's open in the offseason but cape may has tons more options for restaurants and shopping and still maintains "quaint". You can also take the ferry to get there.

Trying to decide which one for upcoming spring break (late March). We know it will be too cold for swimming, but are just looking for a quaint place close to beaches/nature, a little bit of history, cute downtown area, etc. We are planning to rent a cottage and have good options in both locations but have never been to either destination before.
