No, you can't submit a W-9 and should fill out a W-8BEN instead. Also, before your employer pays your compensation, they must withhold 30% federal income tax - if you are a self-employed contractor. Your employer may not know that and may need some advice. I'm a CPA and a non-resident myself (because of the visa type), so I know a lot about taxation of non-residents. I can probably walk you through the details and IRS publications for a nominal fee, if you want to meet in person. My e-mail is virginia_cpa at yahoo.com

Also, make sure you are indeed a US resident. If not, you should fill out a W-8BEN instead of a W-9.

Assuming you have to file as married filing separately, the threshold is 3,900 for 2013.

OP again. Just to add that the contract for this work is not as an employee and they would not withhold my tax. I have to fill in a W9 form.

I am new to the US. I am so far a SAHM and have been offered a job 5 hours a week, for which I would make $150 a week.

My husband is a foreign diplomat, so we do not have to submit tax returns. Could somebody tell me if, me working for around $600 monthly would change this tax situation? Or what the implications are, or how can I find out? Is there a website?

Yes, could find an accountant to tell me but I am hoping to find the answer by myself.

I do have a work permit but still need to register for Social Security number.

Thanks
