I gave my son kindle touch for 9 th bday. He loves it, and reads longer. He likes to read reviews and occ downloads free games. There is also a reading aloud function. It lets the kid have techy fun for the purpose of reading. And his books come thru my account, so we can read books at the same time and pay once. I am actually enjoying Alex rider books

I get what you're saying. I didn't really see the point before I tried one. As soon as I started using one, I was hooked. I just love taking all those books with me everywhere and going from one to another right away. It's really cool to take your own library, and your library's ebooks, with you in your bag all the time. I've always read as much as I could, but now I'm reading every spare second because I have all the books I could want right in my bag. It's neat. My older son is finding the same - the younger ones have no desire for one, which makes sense. Once you're into chapter books without pictures, it's a lot different, of course.

14:51, Yes we do. She reads in bed each night for 15 to 20 mins and she turns off her lights and uses the back light. She goes right to sleep now and before with a book or her ipad and the regular lamp light it took her longer to fall asleep.

DD (7.5 and a HUGE reader) begged for a Kindle for Hanukkah after she borrowed mine. She got one, she loves it!

Do you feel it's worth the extra bucks Do for paper weight's back light? Tks!

My 9 year old loves to read, and has taken over my basic Kindle - mostly, because we saw that there are so many ebooks that we can take out of the library. It's really cool. Audio and regular.

Agree with PP. It really depends on how much he likes to read. It's especially good for travel. I have a regular Kindle but we opted for a Fire for our kid's 9th birthday. It's not used regularly for apps and other screen time but it is nice to have that option, as it saves the kid from borrowing the iPad/iPhones as often.

It depends on how much they liek to read. Plus even if they like to read they may be slightly disappointed that it isn't a Fire.

I gave a basic nook to my 10 year old step-daughter and she loved it. But she'd never had any technology before and loves to read.

just wondering if anyone has bought either a kindle or nook e-reader (no game or wifi) as a gift for DS, and how well was it recieved. this would be in addition to a toy (lego or wii game) of his choice. tks!
