But is horribly painful to get the call of some nurse - maybe not even your assigned nurse coordinator - announcing you're not pregnant. Sorry, been through that too many times. I test before so I can come to terms with the outcome. There are going to be tears regardless, might as well be in the comfort of my own home instead of at my office.

This works if you're truly able to let go of the hope, if you're not holding on to the idea that the beta may show a different result. Since I have heard of a couple stories where it did, I am then alternating between and desperate, unrealistic hope when I test early, so I don't.

Whatever works to lessen the pain, you should do, for some, that's testing early and knowing, for others, like me, it's having ONE definitive result.

SGFC tests no earlier than 13 days past 5 day transfer according to my nurse - there is no way that multiple HPTs are going to be negative and then someone would suddenly get a positive beta. That's the equivalent of 18 days past ovulation. The only time I've heard of the "surprise BFP beta" is when the beta is scheduled at 9dpt (which at some clinics is when the first beta is scheduled) - and even then it's extremely rare. Like unicorn rare.

OP, 12:30 here. You really did test too early. I had a friend who did that, and like another poster here, went in to her beta in tears asking "what's the point?", and then, later that afternoon, we get the email "Color me surprised"--and her beta was 200+, nothing to sneeze at and theoretically it should have meant that a pregnancy test a couple of days earlier would have been positive.

Forget about that test. It's irrelevant. Go forward and angst all you want the day of the beta--probably the day before too, who are we kidding--but in this case, procrastinating is affirmatively a good thing.

Managing my emotions in this process so the rest of my life doesn't fall apart has been an unexpectedly overwhelming burden--almost as unexpected as the infertility itself. Minimizing heartbreak here and there where we can is the least we can do for ourselves.

OP here - thanks to all. My beta is not until 13dp5dt. I have taken everyone's advice and kept away from the sticks for now. 12:30, what you said really resonated with me. My thinking on all of this has certainly changed, before yesterday I did not know how anybody could wait. Now I see the other side. I am waiting for now, but I think I will probably test the morning of beta - I really don't want bad news on the phone at work. I think knowing - really knowing - will be good for me. This not being sure but thinking it's negative is brutal. Thanks for everyone's support.

So sorry, OP. big hugs, but don't worry...nothing is set yet - its still early. I hope you are doing ok...hugs

As for betas after 5dt, my 5dt was today and my beta is the 15th - next Friday...so, 9 days? Seems early but I'll take it. I think it might be because if the can do Friday not Monday, if gives possibly bad news a weekend to be digested vs a week at work dealing with many stressful things? But maybe I am being to generous!

I disagree with the PPs. I've gotten three BFNs in a row and now always test early. Yes, seeing a BFN on my HPT stings but nothing is more painful than a call from some nurse coldly letting me know that I'm not pregnant. Would rather process it at home and in my own time. IVF is hard enough without the added drama of getting "the call."

Shady Grove doesn't test until 13dp5dt. It's torture but I refuse to test on my own earlier. Like others said it's too painful to see that BFN

THIS!! Stop testing and hold out for the beta.

When DO they test after a 5dt?

After my first failed IVF, I stopped testing. I see no point of extra days of tears, and there will be plenty of time for joy if it's a BFP. I tested VERY early on my frozen cycle--6 or 7 dp3dt, so that if I got a BFN I'd know that it wasn't definitive--it did end up being a BFN but at least I was functional at work because I truly believed that I'd simply tested too early.

I learned the hard way--there are enough days of tears and heartbreak in this process, I need no reason for extra. Since the BFP is only going to come once, doing the math--there are more tears involved in testing early than in waiting for the beta.

Not to mention two people I know had negative earlier HPTs (Days 10 and 12p 2dt, one had a negativeeven on the day of the the beta) only to get a BFP, and a good one (200+ beta)--so testing before beta would only torture me.

However, I will probably ask for an earlier beta, this time, for 14 DPO.

Sit tight, and I hope that you get that positive in the next few days. Step away from the sticks.

Good luck!

Well, I know why I tested - because I was thinking how great it would be to get a positive. But of course I got a BFN - no hint of a line, no shadow, no nothing. So now I am upset that this round was a failure, but am still clinging to a little bit of hope that maybe it was too early. Which is making things even worse because I can't yet move on. Let this serve as a warning to others!
