If you were trying to buys beer that was part of a six-pack, then yes, the cashier could be fired. Certain things are packaged to be bought as a set and cannot be sold separately. Just find a store that sells individual beers

The Giant near my house sells singles of many of the craft breweries, so no, there's no VA law that forbids it. Local ordinances might affect it, but I haven't heard of any local areas that have something like that in place. My bet is on the cashier not knowing what they were talking about. Either it was an issue of being confused about a store policy to not break up six packs, or just simple ignorance.

It is illegal in parts of DC, not sure about Virginia. The store however is in its rights to refuse to break up a six pack if that's their policy.

Oh, yeah he said that I could buy a single, larger beer. I wanted a specialty beer to flavor the queso.

I tried to purchase a single beer at Giant in VA for a queso recipe and was told by the cashier and manager that it is illegal to buy a single beer and they would go to jail if the sold it. My BS meter went off. Of course, they told me it's perfectly fine to buy 5 more to make a 6 pack. If it's really a law, then it has to go down in the stupid law book. Somehow, I'm suspicious that its really store policy to get you to buy more.
