As an American, you simply cannot compete with that.
As those economies improve (read: costs increase) work is starting to move back to the US. The Economist had a whole special report on it a few weeks ago. Here's one of the articles:

There's a reason Fortune 500 companies use Indian labor.
As an American, you simply cannot compete with that.
From what I read, Elance sucks the root.
Better to write and pitch on spec.

We've used them as a buyer. Actually for some very complicated stuff (we're a software company), we use people in the US. You just can't get the skills abroad, if it's very high-end and cutting-edge stuff.
So, OP's question is about being a seller. You can do it, and show why you're better than the rest. For example, I think US-based marketing peopel are usually better than those abroad.

Great results, and I paid less than a third of what I would have paid to a US firm. Over the years, I've recommended the company to many friends and colleagues. They were that good.

It is saturated with cheap foreign labor and they take a large fee. I have found a few decent jobs but they are far and few.
