I believe FCPS has a general policy of no more than about 10 minutes per grade level. Of course, that could vary by child.

OP here. I would be fine if this were the policy. But, my child gets penalized the next day. She will have to do the work before she can go to recess or they will withhold some other privilege. I'm a little afraid to complain as there may be retaliation. This doesn't sit well with me and honestly I'm pretty uncomfortable with the teacher.

We have 5 minutes spelling and 25 min reading each evening. math HW and reading report once a week.
I feel we have too little math so I send my DC to Kumon this month.

That's outrageous. Parents need to complain and make this type of thing stop. So damaging. If more parents and teachers got together, armed with all the research about how ridiculous it is for a second grader to be doing homework like this, things could change. My husband is a professor of education, and in a very nice, disarming, cooperative way, basically said, we're not having our first grader do these piles of crap worksheets all week. No one advocating that it's a good idea for your daughter to spend her time this way has a leg to stand on. Sometimes it's actually this vicious cycle of teachers needing to give more homework to placate parents who think more homework equals more learning, more hard work, and more discipline. It's just wrong.

We do this, but my child is dyslexic, so it is hard for her.

We are in Fairfax at an elementary school. I'd prefer not to mention the specific school as I'm trying to get the teacher to change the expectation.

reading, maybe 1-3 math worksheets a week that take about 5 minutes. Occasional (rarely) test study and optional word study homework.

OP, what school or school system is your child at?

20 minutes of reading, math that can be banged out in less than 5 minutes, and language arts notebook. Depending on whether there is a writing assignment for the notebook or any worksheets in addition to the math, homework takes anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. That includes reading. The hour days are generally the days when DS is dragging his feet in completing a writing assignment or he wants to complete the entire week's packet in one sitting to get it done. He also brings home an optional math enrichment packet once a month with logic puzzles and more challenging problems than the curriculum provides. It is about 10 pages and he takes about an additional hour over the month to complete that.

Which school? We only do weekly homework that takes an hour to complete if you do it all together once a week.
