Some advice... If it comes through and it's a "full relo" keep in mind that the value of the true up will hit your W2. That could be a lot. For us it was $100k. My firm did a tax true up but it was based only on my salary tax band not on my wife's and mine combined or on the prior years tax rate. That meant we fell short a few percentage points and ate maybe $8,000 in taxes between state and federal. The company policy said as much, but they also chose to pick my tax rate from the married filing jointly tables which were lower. I was a bit of a hard ass about it and got the true up increased but it was a six month argument with HR.

Just keep it in mind. It was the first "executive" style relo package I'd been offered, so it was all new to me.

My DH's company approached him just before Christmas and asked him if he'd be willing to make a move to this area. They told him they wanted to move fast on it so my hubby and I quickly discussed it and told them we were willing (we had been talking about moving to a new house anyway). Well, he hasn't heard anything. When he asks they tell him they are awaiting approval for the position and that they want him for it, but need to wait for some official head nod. They haven't yet discussed the relocation policy with him - they have told him that it's premature for this. But, if we can't afford to move here on what they'll offer him than moving forward is a mute point.

Is this normal for companies? I don't want to jump the gun and get annoyed, but I do kind of feel like they are making us put our lives on hold. Just want to hear what other folks opinions are on these kind of relocation situations.
