I went last year with some girlfriends and we went to Tao one night which was fun and more "hip" and the 2nd night we went to Novecento which is an Argentinean place in Soho (one of my friend's is Argentinean and picked it). Both were great. Tao is a big restaurant, and has a large, loud bar and more of club scene. Novecento was much cozier with a bistro feel. Both had great food and service.

We recently stayed a few blocks north of there. It was fine. It is a few blocks walk to both Times Square and Grand Central, and also near Bryant Park, which was fine. I would have personally liked to be basically on top of one station, but it worked out fine.

I am the same person who recommended Spice Market previously. I went with a few girlfriends and we had a great time - the drinks were great and the food was lots of fun. It is in the Meatpacking District which looked fun.

I'm not sure why a pp called that a weird part of town--I'm not familiar with that specific hotel, but the location looks fine to me.

Will this trip be soon? You could go ice skating in Bryant Park, which is very close to your hotel.

For reasonably priced (by NYC standards) but good food, check out some of the restaurants in East Village. Lots of good ethnic places, and the east village is a lot less touristy than other parts of the city. I will specifically recommend Vaselka for Ukrainian food.

That's not a weird part of the city, you can go up and down quite easily. I'd stay there! Great Indian food in Curry Hill. I love the National at the Benjamin Hotel ... it's at 50th and 2nd or thereabouts.
(When I go to NYC, I stay with friends, midtown East, Gramercy Park, Harlem, Lower East Side and Upper West Side. I know the range of nabes pretty well.)

Thanks for the recs. What makes it a weird part of the city? Location sounded good to me and the hotel got good reviews (and I got a good price) but I can change if there is something better. We wanted to be close to stuff, especially the subway, but not like right on top of Times Square... Can you rec another neighborhood and/or hotel?

Can anyone recommend restaurants, nightlife, and outside the box activities for an upcoming girls' weekend in New York City?we will do the usual day/evening activities including seeing a show, seeing a museum, shopping etc. but could use help with restaurants, bars, and other activities. We would like a mix of reasonably priced but tasty/fun and more fancy dining.
