Going in March/April (non-spring break weeks) can get you a good savings. Timeshares can be rented for a low cost and will get you a condo with full amenities, pool, etc.
6-8 hours driving can get you as far down as Myrtle Beach, but the ocean water will not be warm enough to swim in. If you want a sure bet, go with Florida. Because it's such a popular traveling destination, off-season rentals can be had at a steal.
We live in Florida (back and forth between Florida an DC every couple of years). March is usually warm even here in northeast Florida. Our community pool opens in March. I was at the beach over the weekend. The water was cool, but warm enough to swim in. March and early April are very busy tourist times. College spring break for mant Florida schools is the week of March 18th. My high school kids' spring break is the week of March 25th. You won't avoid spring break anytime fro the second two weeks of March through the end of April.
