I think the Arlington person said she "misses" the social Safeway, not that she still goes there. That's not the same thing at all. But in any event, parts of Arlington are like 5 minutes from Georgetown, especially on a weekend. I find once I'm in the car I'm more than willing to drive another 5-10 minutes for a better shopping experience, especially if it evens out by spending less time at the store, which I do if the store is less crowded and better laid out.

I live near you- here's what I do:

-stock up the freezer with meat / poultry / fish from WF on P St at an off time (8 am on Saturday, that kind of thing)
-every few weeks stock pantry with Peapod order (pasta, canned goods, also fresh veggies, paper products,...)
-fill in in between with Harris Teeter on Kalorama

We live in the U ST neighborhood, and do a mix of WF on P ST about every 2 weeks, Yes Organic Market on 14th ST 2-3 small trips/week, Trader Joe's on 25th ST once a month, and HT in Adams Morgan a few times/year.

I always end up at the westbard giant. It is worth the drive for easy parking, boars head deli meat and good produce. But I would take a big one floor Harris Teeter with wine anyday!

Do you not like the HT in adams morgan? I would prefer that over any safeway or giant.

The grocery stores here suck. If I don't want to drive far, I go to Harris Teeter in Adams Morgan or 1 Street, NE. If I'm willing to drive, I go to Wegman's in Prince George's County. It's closer then the ones in VA.

The WF in FH is so awesome. When I go to Tenleytown or Logan, I feel totally claustrophobic.

We live in Columbia Heights, but the Giant sucks. We love our farmer's market but we cannot buy all of our groceries there (tooooo expensive). Where do you go for groceries? We are trying to eat healthy. The Whole Foods on P St is very crowded, and they really need a renovation.

Haha. That store is relatively new and had a fairly recent renovation. It's just a crowded area.

I second the Social Safeway. I really prefer Giant (looking forward to the O Street Giant re-opening as I loathe the Columbia Heights Giant), but the Social Safeway on Wisconsin is a much nicer shopping experience. They have a nut bar! and a wine room! Not that I ever have used those things

We have a car. We occassionally drive to the WF at Friendship Heights, definitely my favorite but it is kind of far just for groceries .

Technically (but barely) in MD is the Whole Foods at Friendship Heights. It is way more spacious and pleasant, IMO, than the cramped ones at Tenley and Glover Park. And, if you drive, the parking is so much better than any other WF in NW DC.

I love the social safeway in Georgetown. I like it better than my Arlington Harris Teeter, and miss it.

I acutally like the Harris Teeter in Adams Morgan. I live in Mt. Pleasant and I never go to the Giant. HT is my preferred grocery store for a regular grocery store. I go to the WF in FH because they have stuff the one in Glover doesn't have, particularly at the deli. I rarely go to the one on P Street.

For the basic stuff, I like the Giant at the Van Ness metro. If you have a car, parking in the garage is easy and you get 2 hours free parking so plenty of time to walk next door to CVS too. If I want Whole Foods, I go to the one at Tenleytown but I avoid it during peak hours (ie, right after work, weekend afternoon). The one at Friendship Heights is nice too.

I heard very good things about Wegman's but it is too far.
