If it is a large company, I would apply for both. I expect large orgs may have a formal process for considering applicants for the specific position, and may not consider you if you did not apply. If a smaller org, may be more flexible process, and they might sort you out as they see fit (bump your application up or down to the other position).

If I apply for the VP job but they decide I am not qualified, will it hurt my chances of getting the director position? They might not want to offer me something lower, even if I might take it.

The VP job requires 8 yrs but the director job doesnt specify. I am currently a VP with approx 10 yrs.

Oh, I would apply to the most senior one and then call to follow up. Always apply to the most senior one you are qualified for. If they like you they will work with you to created the right role and level.

Job spec should say which is more senior or needs more tenure or managing more people.
In finance groups, it goes managing director, then a director is senior to a VP, who is senior to an associate. There can be many of each level.
If, of course, you are talking about a president or VP of which there is only 1 of the whole company, then that is different.

VP is usually higher than director - almost always.

There are 2 similar jobs at the same company that I am interested in. they are very similar - 1 is for a director position and 1 for a VP position. They are in the same group. Generally, I think director is a higher position, but its difficult to say from the descriptions online, one states the number of required years of experience but the other one doesnt. Should I just submit applications for both? Call HR and talk to them about my resume to see which is a better fit? Submit a resume with a letter saying I am interested in a position in that group and let them decide?

Any advice would be great. Thanks!
