i think he was hooking up with the hoaxer (the guy who got the girls' picture) and thus, needed a cover. so, his gay boyfriend helped him arrange the cover.

Even if he didn't want to come out, why the need to invent a g/f? He's Mormon and young -- I doubt anyone would question him for not having a g/f and if they did, he could have stuck to the fact that he (like some Mormons) was religious and not planning to "date" like the rest of the population but would have some kind of semi-arranged marriage down the road with whoever he was meant to be with. He could punt on this for a long time because it's not like people expect 22 yr old football stars to marry before the NFL draft.

I hears about this on npr tonight; he' college kid; why is this newsworthy? Hint: not a sports fan, but even still, he's not a professional.

He was definitely in on it. The words above are spanish, internet and dutch ways of saying: "Intensely feeling the embarrassment of others". Because, yeah. Wow.

After hearing this on morning Joe, I started googling. I read some of the major news outlets articles, and I felt so sorry for this guy, who appeared to be the victim. I thought how tragic and pathetic to be fooled like this. He'll never live this down, being so naive and innocent to think this fake person was his girlfriend. He'll be ripped to shreds and I wouldn't be surprised if he commits suicide ala Australian radio show victim.

Then, I read the Deadspin article(s). I now think he was in on it. He's a sick SOB.

Fascinating story. I'm unclear whether the player was in on the hoax or not.

Saw this on Morning Joe. What's incredible to me is that legitimate news organizations reported it as if it was true, and Deadspin was the one to ferret out the truth.
