if it's from a grocery store where it was sitting out on the counter at room temperature, then it is definitely fine to sit unrefrigerated.

if it was sitting in a cooler in the grocery store, then it could possibly need refrigeration but most likely would still be fine out at room temp.

most grocery stores use shelf-stable "whipped topping" which stays good for nearly forever.

A buttercream frosted cake can certainly be left out for a day or two. After that the cake will start to go pretty stale. Lot's of people leave butter out on the counter. If you use it up in less than a week it's fine. I'd think that whipped topping would be fine too from a safety perspective but it would probably start to weep and get look icky before it's unsafe.

But, both real whipped cream and buttercream should be refrigerated. If it has that faux sugar and lard icing that has a half-life of a few decades, you're safe leaving it out.

Maybe you can put it outside or in the garage where it's cooler?

We just picked up a birthday cake for a party tomorrow and it doesn't fit in our refrigerator. Does anyone know if a grocery store cake with a whipped topping has to be refrigerated overnight?
