State Farm - umbrella policy with our cars. They were the cheapest for us when I compared about 4 other companies. Nationwide was the most expensive (by FAR, FAR and AWAY!!!)

USAA if you're eligible - though they're not always the cheapest, I've always liked dealing with them (through ups and downs)

tried usaa but found them to be pretty expensive compared to other ones and they often forced us to over insure. They also had progressively raised our premiums over a few year time period to the point that they become very expensive over their main competitors. We have Travelers (GEICO's homeowner division) and auto and umbrella with GEICO. $1M umbrella is $150. Great for ten years through two claims.

Ditto on Erie. We had a lot of storm damage from Irene and they cut us a check for $4200 without hassle.

We have Erie for everything and are very pleased with them.

Whatever insurance you get, take the time to also get an umbrella policy - it is only a few hundred per year and SO important. It will insure you beyond your policy limits should be liable for anything above and beyond that happens in your house, on the road, etc.

We have $3,000,000 through Erie and I believe its only $200/year. A lot of people don't do this- but its critical.

State Farm for 30 years. also buy an umbrella policy to cover disasters, car accidents (get your car insurance with them too). Do read, as 23:24 what you get for flood damage. In some policies there is none. Be specific about any water problems. Will it cover for burst pipes? A flood? Electricity outage which requires you to go to a hotel for ten days - will they cover hotel and loss of food in refrigerator and insurance Ask re hurricanes. Perhaps even earthquakes now that we've had a few more large ones.

But I think it's generally wise to go with whoever has your car insurance as you can get a break in premiums.

Be sure to actually read the policy. A lot of policies now have sky-high deductibles for losses during "named storms" (i.e., hurricanes). Avoid those like the plague.

I'm a newbie homeowner-to-be so I need some guidance here. Does anyone have any specific recommendations or advice?
