through friends or other doctors or best yet, through friends who are doctors.

Where they did their residency will generally tell you how competent they are. The vast majority of those who trained at Hopkins (for instance) are very well trained. However, this obviously can't predict how the practice runs, whether the doctor is a nice person, etc.

I ask other doctors. if you are looking for list Checkbook has a best area doctors list but you have to pay for it. I wouldn't trust the one in Washingtonian.

Maybe there could be a compilation, such as with the ped dentist list? That would be appreciated!

I have tried asking my friends, but they are so spread out geographically, it tends to not help. People I don't know so well are not as helpful ( I think it might be the area?)

Does Web MD serve any purpose?

Would DCUM not be a good place to start, from people in the same area?

Ask your friends who they use.

It might not be a bad idea to post what type of physician you are looking for. You will definitely get some guidance in doing so!

I ask for recommendations from my other doctors. For example, I found my dentist through my GYN.

If you don't have any doctors at all, try asking a trusted friend for the names of some doctors she or he uses.

Trust your gut, too. If you don't get a good vibe from a doctor or the office staff, then move on.

I appreciate any input. Google searches tend to result in a competition of lists and ads, none of which are helpful. I really appreciate any help.
