I have a Vitamix, and it does mix well. But it's not the miracle-worker I thought it would be. Also, one thing I wish I had known: The blades are not removable, so if you make something like pesto or almond butter, you end up wasting a lot (just because you can't get it out of the blender. And even getting out what you can is something of a pain.)

Spray the inside with a little olive oil (or Pam) before making the thicker items. I used it to make hummus and found a small spatula got almost everything out.

The NINJA! Check it out. The blade is very sharp and it is removable (be careful with it). You can also buy the one that has the single-serve smoothy attachment rather than the big pitcher. I didn't get it, but now wish I had. It gets very good reviews.

I'm an official member of the Vitamix cult.

I use it no less than twice a day. I make everything in it and it has been the answer to my weight loss and now my children consume an insane amount of spinach, kale, and swiss chard. I even bring it with me when we travel (road trip, not plane). I went from a size 12 to a size 6 and have never felt better in my life.

I got it for my mom for Christmas and she calles me at least every other day excited about some sort of salad dressing, smoothie, soup, or dip she has created in it.

I agree with this. We have a vitamix and while I like it (I made smoothies everyday btw) I don't really think it was worth the money. It's not THAT much better than my previous kitchen aid blender. I wanted to be in the cult but just don't see it.

I got a great little Ninja for making smoothies. The Kitchen Pulse or something like that. I think it was under $70. You mix the drink in the cup so there is less cleaning up. It mixes up greens too.

I love smoothies in my Nutribullet. Simple & easy clean up. $79 at Bed, Bath & Beyond when you use the 20% coupon.

I think smoothies require a better blender, especially if you are going to put in any greens. Blendtec and Vitamix are both great, but not cheap.

My mom has asked for a blender for her birthday. Any recs on which ones are good? FWIW, she's not going to use it for gourmet cooking, mostly for smoothies, so I think we are looking for something mid range.
