OP here. Thanks so much PPs for your feedback. I had no idea that credit card companies could pull credit reports with just the last 4 digits, but I did have a knee-jerk uncomfortable reaction when the recruiter asked for it on the first call. I didn't even express an interest in the job.

Do not provide the last 4 digits of your SSN and do not work with anyone who tries to pressure you into giving it, like telling you they cannot help you if you do not provide it. Although many places need the full SSN for financial information, there are many places where even the last 4 digits can be used for financial identification (like with some credit cards). For many credit card companies, they can pull a credit report, call a credit card company and with your last 4 SSN digits and your zip code can get financial information on you. You should only provide your SSN to a company when you have accepted a job to work.

No, definitely not normal. I've worked with a lot of recruiters when I was out of work 2 years ago, and I have never been asked to provide this, especially early on. (I did have to give my SSN when I had a contingent offer for my current job, so that they could do a background check, but I think that's quite different). This sounds really sketchy and I would NOT work with this recruiter.

I just got a call from a recruiter (I figured outsourced overseas firm) who I spoke with. He said if I'm interested in the role for which he contacted me, I should send my resume along with the last 4 of my SSN. Everything I do: credit card company, bank, mortgage provider asks for the last 4 of my SSN. I'm a little skittish to be providing this info. Has anybody else had this experience?
