OK, given you have tried the adult way, I fully admit that I would (in the Spring) buy a HUGE windchime and put it where they would hear it. Not out of spite, but because most people just don't think things are bad until it happens to them.

Or in the middle of the night moves theirs to the outside of their bedroom window.

I'd also be tempted to go over and cut the strings one-by-one. One a week. Until the chimes slowly subsided.

Well, the townhomes are pretty old and the walls seem to be think and we can hear quite a bit. When their teenage daughter listens to loud music in her room, I can hear it in my baby's room. We moved the crib so that he is not right next to her wall where the speakers seem to be located.

I'd invite you to come over and listen and I can guarantee that you would be bothered by the noise at night. But then, maybe we'll get used to it in time. It is most definitely better than the loud music or yelling by the teenager. I don't really mind wind chimes, but there are 'good' and 'bad' ones out there. Some are just of better quality than others. This one seems to be of the cheaper quality. Hey, I might learn to like them so much that I will acquire my own wind chime in no time.

OP, I am on the opposite side in that I love to listen to wind chimes with the windows open. And we have some but we are in the 'burbs with larger yards.

I don't think there is much you can do if they won't take them down. And, frankly, they don't have to do so (and I'm not sure I would if you asked me to). Try a fan? Or earplugs? Or hopefully, over time, you may learn to like them?

PP, we normally get along with those neighbors. We are not friends with them, but definitely cordial. Our homes and decks are very close being a townhouse community and it would not help to move it to the other end of the deck. I think, I will wait a couple more days and then ask one more time nicely. We have new windows in the house, but you can definitely hear the wind chime. It is one of those metal ones and it is rather large. I prefer the wooden ones, but we do not keep one on the deck. I would not mind it being outside during the day, but I would prefer it to be moved inside after 9 pm. It is very loud.

They won't move it somewhere further away from your bedroom windows? Really?

Ugh, I hate wind chimes, even when they're not keeping me up at night. Anyway, I second (or third) the recommendation for a white noise machine. My brother has a sleep mate and you can't hear anything outside the bedroom. It's awesome. Runs about $47 on Amazon (where it's ranked #1).

I think they're really big jerk for not removing it at night. But you're limited on options.
-white noise machine of some sort
-putting a large wind chime out where they hear it (childish, I agree, but kind of funny)
-turning a blind eye if something should mysteriously happen to the wind chime during the night. Say, a wind chime thief comes and takes it.... (only kidding)

You need a white noise machine or better insulation around the windows. I have a wind chime on our back porch and you can't hear it when the door and windows are shut.

We live in a suburban townhouse community and my next door neighbor installed a huge wind chime on his deck over the Holidays. It is driving me crazy and the constant noise is making it difficult to fall asleep and to say asleep. Our bedrooms overlook our deck, so we are pretty much exposed to the wind chime dangling sound all night long. Maybe in time, I will get used to it, but for the past five days, it has really bothered us a lot. Right now, we keep the windows closed and therefore it is not too bad, but I can image how it is going to feel like during Spring when we keep the windows open. I have asked them if they would mind taking the wind chime inside during the night, but they want to keep it outside. I'm not sure what to do. Their bedrooms are on the other side of their house and therefore they cannot hear the dangling noise during the night. I even thought about getting my OWN wind chime and putting it by my front so that they, too, will be exposed to the noise and learn from it, but that is childish. Have to admit though it crossed my mind.... I actually like wind chimes, just not during the night on a windy day. LOL!
