OP back - thank you for all the suggestions so far, and please keep them coming! PP, I know it's going to be expensive because I've always heard that cabinets compromise the vast majority of the cost of any kitchen renovation. But there's no MAJOR work - just replacing what's already there in the same place as it already is, and no appliances. I'm hoping to keep it under $50K, my husband thinks we can do it for $25K, so as I said we have no idea. We have really high ceilings and would like cabinets that go all the way up, so 19:45's info is very helpful.

We just put new cabinet fronts on our existing cabinets since they were in great condition. Went to a kitchen store and ordered it from them. My husband did the install. Went to a granite place and ordered a new countertop, sink, and faucet. The store installed it for us. Got a new floor from home depot and used their installers. Painted ourselves. No designers involved. Total cost $5500. Looks really nice. No regrets.

Go to Home Depot and check out styles / makers. Get a couple of catalogue a from the makers you like, then either in store or on line you can get the materials that say the full line of cabinets they make. And unless you're looking to spend big $$, you can probably go standard - most of the cabinet makers make a wide range of cabinets in 3" increments, so it's not hard to work within the 'standard' range.

You can also 'design' your kitchen with a Home Depot designer that will give you a full floor plan/3D rendering. These are probably not the people to help you be creative /innovative with difficult spaces, but if you pretty much know what you want it works well. Or if you are at all handy you can take the kitchen / cabinet measurements and lay it out for yourself. That's what I did, then basically just went into Home Depot with the specific list of cabinet code numbers I wanted.

We did exactly what you are writing about and did it with Cabinet Discounters. They did the kitchen design, we got the countertop there and we had them do the installation. They brought in an electrician and a plumber as well as the carpenters. I really liked Cabinet Discounters. I also looked at Home Depot, but liked what Cabinet Discounters offered better.

If you're looking to do it on a budget, visit Ikea. I know it sounds odd, but two of my relatives had their kitchens redone using Ikea cabinets, and they look great. I believe Ikea can refer you to installers also.

We used Mr Campo he is very professional and know his job very well; our friens used him too and they all happy with him.

Agree. I wouldn't have pointed out the grammar, but, yeah -- agenda.

But I also have a kitchen of about the same size that needs help, so I am interested in price points and how/where to start. We are NOT handy, so after coming up with concept and basic plans/wants, we need help!

OP--we bought our Kraftmaid cabinets from Home Deopt for our 100 year old rowhouse. I wanted a style that was in line with the period of our house. The quality is very good. At least check it out.

Thank you, not OP but I have the same question. Our kitchen is small and we really just need custom cabinets and counter tops and faucets... we have a farmhouse sink.

We done our kitchen that it was the same side as yours and we really didn't need a designer, but we got a contractor who made the design and all the work, he was a really good guy he was always in the job and asking if everything was the way i wanted, i like the responsibility of the contractor and I'm really happy with the job the he done for us. We need to replace 25-year-old failing thermofoil cabinets, so we will be replacing our Formica countertops, sink and faucet and repainting all at pretty much the same time. We do NOT need new appliances, or new floors, or to move anything, open up walls, anything like that. I do want the cabinets to be nice and solid painted wood - I think Kraftmaid would be the minimum quality level. How do I go about this? Do I need a general contractor? Or a kitchen designer? I pretty much know the look I want, have spent time on Houzz, but I don't know where to go to look at actual stuff - our house is 125 years old so I don't think Home Depot will have something in the style I want. And I guess I will have to figure out if the cabinets need to be standard or custom. Any suggestions you have are welcome!

And also, if you've done this for a kitchen that's about 14' x 14', I would love to know how much you spent.
