A lot of pretty bad things are a part of history -- like slavery, women being denied the vote, etc.
My family has lived in DC for generations and there's a lot about this city and its history that I cherish, but the ridiculously offensive name of our football team? Whats to love about that?
But I am proud of the fact that the Bullets changed their name. As for every 20 years, thats the only name change I can recall in my lifetime and it was a lot longer than 20 years ago.

Yeah, no. It's equivalent to "Darkies." It's a dated, racist reference to someone's skin color. It's not equivalent to "Indians." It's not the world's biggest deal, and not enough for me to stop cheering for the team, but they should just change it and make money selling all new merchandise with some new name. There's just no reason to hold onto it.

But I also love the team, the fans, and RGIII. You don't have to embrace the racist name just because you're a fan - and you can also recognize that in the greater scheme of world problems, it's probably not that high up.
