Really? I thought Feds were on liberal leave for Reagan's procession. My BIL is a Fed and I remember him coming from work.

Yes, Feds were closed that day for sure. Local area schools open as far as I can recall. If something happens to GHWB, I would expect Feds closure.

One of the things I enjoy about the Obama presidency is seeing the photos and video of his interaction with small children. That's a side we never saw of the elder Bush, but you catch a glimpse of it in this film. I think it was especially moving to see a 90+ year old man grieving for a baby he lost decades ago.

GHWB is 88 not 90 plus.

The Feds closed for Nixon too even without the state funeral.

I wasn't in DC when Nixon passed, but was given days off when both Reagan and Ford had their funerals. If there's a full state funeral for a former president (there wasn't one for Nixon - at the family's request), I would expect a full federal government closure in DC, but would not expect area schools to close. Let's hope that Mr. Bush makes a full recovery soon and we won't have to worry about it for some time to come.

I don't recall a day off either, but I remember flags are at half staff for a month.

Oooh, I remember the day of mourning for President Ford. It was the first week in January, and I showed up at daycare with my toddler. My daycare provider said she was closed because it was a "Federal Holiday." I love her to death, but on that day my love for her was not flowing. I work for FCPS, and schools were open as was everything else.
I made her watch my daughter for a few hours while I went to school and scrambled to get things together to take the day off.
Grrrr.

Nothing closes as far as I'm aware.

+1 There is a service on tv, flags at half staff, but other than that, business as usual.

I went to the procession for Reagan - and I remember it being after work (and the weather was HOTTER than hell).

I hate to be morbid and I hope that President Bush rallies but I'm also wondering does Montgomery County close the schools for the National Day of Mourning when a former president dies?

I know the feds will close and DC government usually closes as well.

Anyone who had school age kids in 07 when President Ford died remember what they did?

Thanks!
