It's always an emotional or spiteful battle over household furniture, or minor holidays like Labor Day or President's Day weekend. Months later, when they find out how much the negotiations really cost, they always regret it.

When things with my husband are good, they are great, but when they are bad they are awful. He is one of those types that prides himself on being an asshole at work and believe me, it crosses into the home life. Think Ari Gold. Anything that I can do now to protect myself if it comes to divorce? I have a PT job and make between 40-70k per year, depending.

What about the kids?

The worst age for kids is between 8 and 12, especially if the parents refuse to put their interests first. Almost all divorce ends up being about money. In some cases, especially if there is infidelity, there is a lot of blaming and bad behavior in the beginning of the divorce process. It's true, you awful when the kids are exposed to it. A good divorce attorney will focus the attention on the process and the importance of working out a custody agreement that is beneficial for the kids.

Unfortunately divorce brings out the worst in people. I encourage my clients to take the high road when it comes to their kids.

Thanks. Was interested in the perspective of someone who lives this day to day.

An uncontested divorce is not expensive. The key to keeping the costs down is to eliminate the drama, and to file when both of you are ready. Sometimes you have to wait. Don't go to a lawyer unless your expense is ready to deal with it.
