Look at Washington & Lee. First-rate education at a small liberal arts college -- and an easy drive from D.C. (a plus for any mom).

Tulane and Emory both have plenty of moderate-thinking Republicans.

OP, who is going to college--you or DS? Let him choose where he'd like to go instead of where you are looking for likeminded people.

I went to a small university--about 3,000 undergrad. There was an incredibly organized and active conservative group, a poorly organized liberal group, and about 90% politically apathetic.

And FYI, there is no such thing as a "non-Tea-Party" Republican anymore. Did you catch the news today?

You're either Democrat, Independent or Bat Shit Crazy.
That's okay. I'm still laughing as I type this (wiping away a tear)! OP, almost any college south of the Mason-Dixon should fit your needs but as another poster stated, I wouldn't rule out the big state schools, north or south. Something for everybody there. Seriously, you really won't have a problem.

Duke is generally fine for Rs. A guy in my dorm was a son of a big R guy in Florida.

Honestly, I'd go back and take another look at big state schools. They're so big that I guarantee there are professors AND students who fall on the conservative-but-not-wackadoo end of the spectrum.

Probably not Wisconsin, though. But certainly Michigan, Rutgers, TEXAS, Texas AandM, Florida for certain ... Virginia, North Carolina, absolutely Kentucky and South Carolina ...

oh. University of Iowa, I know this for sure.

As a test, google the university and Young Republicans and see how strong of a presence they have on campus.

I’m a Republican.

Okay – if anyone is still reading – I’m not a Tea Party or Christian Conservative republican – more of a William F. Buckley republican. Even if you hate me, I hope you can help me.

DS is a junior and we are starting to scan the horizon for colleges. I’m having trouble identifying mainstream or larger colleges where conservatives are welcome. DS is probably not going to get into an Ivy – but he isn’t far off – the challenge is that all the top schools seem overwhelmingly liberal. The big state schools are all very liberal too, but when I search for things like “top republican colleges” I get things like Liberty University and BYU – no thanks.
