I don't think it has anything to do with being cheap.

First, soliciting the gifts is totally inappropriate.

Second, I didn't grow up celebrating Christmas. I totally get that in the US Christmas has a large secular aspect to it and that with Thanksgiving and NY it makes up a holiday season. I still sort of resent being told to pay up to help someone celebrate their holiday (being Christmas).

I am not into tipping everyone and their mother. I am happy to tip well when eating out or at the salon, but it irritates me that everyone wants a tip (or to tip) for everything.

I guess I feel like I don't get tips for DOING MY JOB so I don't tip others for doing theirs (wait/serving staff is different).

So is the diabetic thing a way of saying 'don't buy me crappy candy, I want $$?' or is it 'feel sorry for me?'

They are permitted to accept gifts up to $20 value. We tip ours annually, along with trash/recycling guys. This year we included our UPS guy because it's always the same guy and we've had a TON of stuff delivered this year.

OP, you should really report your letter carrier.

It isn't a matter of being a cheapskate. Postmen/women are federal workers and are not to solicit or accept gifts. The fact that some are so blatantly soliciting gifts is a problem. I am the posters whose mail gets dumped at the end of the drive if I don't give into the coercion. It is ridiculous.

I gave my postman $20 this year. It's the same person every day all year long. Don't be a cheapskate. I also tip daycare providers, newspaper delivery, and house cleaning crew.

I always give our mail carrier 25 and trash collectors 100.

It's an especially cold thing to do without good reason in tough times like these, but if the Postman doesn't do his job well, citizens really should complain.

I know, I was just making a joke. I do not even see my postman enough to know who she/ he is. They change throughout the week as well.

But on your point about reporting them if they do not do a good job. I would assume they would find out who reported them (even when these places say its confidential) and then I would be afraid of some kind of retaliation. People are crazy these days.

That is pretty weird. I would just ignore it. Never have the postman money or a gift before. Not like its the same person, at least not for us.

There is a policy against accepting gifts but that has never stopped my postman from actively seeking gifts (specifically money) at the holidays. In fact the one year I didn't make a monetary "gift" he stopped bring my packages to my house and dumped them at the end of the driveway.

I thought there is USPS policy against mail carriers accepting anyting but small gifts ($10 or less), but I may be wrong on that.
