In my experience the backdoors are locked. You need to swipe a badge in order to enter the building. Teachers all have their own badge, and students are given a badge and walk in pairs to go to the restroom.

I think you need to talk to the school about having the same thing.

Our portable is locked as is the door back into the main building. I teach there and it has taken over a year for me to get a key to the building and they are still working on a key to the portable for some teachers. We have to be buzzed into the portable. At my old school, the door to the building was locked but the portables usually weren't (although they could be).

My daughter was in a portable, one of several at an MCPS last year and they were ALWAYS locked in my experience during and after school hours. My daughter is forgetful so we were always trying to get in there to get homework etc. and it was very difficult.

You cannot lock your way to safety. I am in favor of locked doors because of random weirdos and custody issues, but unless you're suggesting banning recess and a tunnel for getting on the bus, you need to look beyond the school's physical plant.

Call the principal or shoot an email about this asking for confirmation that all doors are locked during school hours. Ask for confirmation from her or the appropriate county school official. I suspect all schools are currently revisiting their safety protocol.
