HOS sent an email yesterday afternnoon expressing the heartbreak we all feel for those who were killed, their loved ones and their community. Message also discussed security measures in place and planned for our school. A follow-up email included links to resources on talking with your kids about this. I am hoping there will some communication from the school about how they intend to address this on Monday.

While I appreciated the message yesterday and understand that HOS was trying to reassure parents, I felt it was not appropriate for the HOS to discuss security measures at our school. The school in Newtown did everything possible to protect those children. Asking visitors to wear badges, hiring security guards, installing camers -- that doesn't make your kids safe as long as we allow guns to be so widely available in our country.

We received an email from the head of school with a message from school counselors providing advice on how to handle questions/concerns from children. Nothing was mentioned about school policies and safety procedures. Our school has many buildings with open doors during the day. I was extremely disappointed.

Local public school sent out an email from the Principal reassuring parents that there are specific procedures and protocols rehearsed and in place to support safety for all in a wide range of scenarios.

I think my DD goes to school with your DC. The promised update email on the safety procedures was sent by the head of school a couple of hours ago.

Ditto. Our Head of School's messages to parents were exemplary, empathic and full of helpful information. So greatly appreciated.

Nothing from the head of our private yet but the MS principal sent a thoughtful email and will have a moment of silence on Monday for MS.

Two schools. Both sent extensive email with links. One observed we will be flying flag at half mast. It was comforting to read especially from the one school that discussed trying to shield the youngest children

Nothing from the school. It did seem odd.

I'm more concerned with what the kids are going to talk about on Monday. I have a K student but DC is in class with lots of kids with older siblings.

Nothing. I was disappointed to near nothing. Even though our kids were safe, it just would have helped to have heard from the school.

Our public school system sent out an email explaining security measures in place already at the schools, which was rather funny since I was walking all over the local high school last week at 4:20 trying to locate DS and ran into 100 people - not one asked who I was or what I was doing there (my invisible woman over 50 theory). I have a concealed carry permit but no weapon on me since it is illegal to enter school properties with a firearm. But clearly they have to do more and I intend to talk to the principal about it Monday. There are sign-in/sign-out papers required if you are taking your child to a doctor's appts. But doors are not locked during the day.

My son's small private school purposefully did not tell the students today (I know that's not what you're asking, but I think how a school full of young kids handles something like this during school hours should be discussed - and his school is a high-tech school full of computers, I phones and all the bells and whistles - I'm actually surprised it didn't leak out. I think they handled it very well). I had listened to the news while driving to the school, but had turned to the news off when I picked up carpool because I didn't think other parents would appreciate their children learning about this from me. But then I learned that one of the girls had already picked up on the story when allowed to turn on her cell phone in pick-up line. No email from the school yet, but it is so small and well-hid that I am not concerned.

We did as well (email and recorded phonecall) much appreciated as well
