I bought my 7 year old daughter Uggs. I grew up with a mother who wouldn't spend money on anything she deemed not worthwhile and she also prohibited me from spending my own money on anything she deemed frivolous. I wanted a pair of Jordache jeans when I was in middle school. I had babysitting money to pay for them. Nope. I could have the cheap knockoffs from Kmart. I certainly couldn't spend my own money on the pair of jeans I wanted. Vans? Nikes? Nope. Nope. Plenty of "good" shoes to choose from at a cheaper price point. No need to buy anything ever because you worked for it and you want the "real thing" not the cheap knock off.

My mother gasped in horror when she saw my daughter's Uggs. "Why did you buy her those expensive boots?!!" My response, "Because I can."

You asked, so I'm going to tell you the truth.

I wouldn't think anything at all for a child over 3 or 4. Maybe even 2.

Under 2, though, I'd think the parent was a complete idiot for spending that kind of money and that they must be a FTM.

Try Bearpaws or some other knock off that are just as good quality but less than 1/2 the price.

My 3-year-old has a pair, handed down from a cousin. There are at least 2 or 3 other kids in her preschool class who have them. The silver sparkly ones are particularly popular with the girls. I really didn't think twice about it until you asked. It's a local church preschool, not a fancy private or anything like that.

I wouldn't think anything of it at all. Get them!

My 8 month old has a pair of Uggs because they are cute and better made than the cheap fake shearling boots from Target or Old Navy. They keep his feet warm and that's worth the investment to me. If other people have ill thoughts b/c my son is wearing Uggs, I could not care less. I would not blink if I saw your 6 yo wearing Uggs.

That said, as an Ugg wearer myself, they really are made for only one season. They're suede and they just look dirty after a winter's use. Plus, the soles are soft and they wear down quickly. So, get them and forget about what anyone else has to say about it, but understand that little sister likely won't be able to wear them.

Have you looked at eBay? Might be able to get a pair of "gently used" Uggs for a deal.

We found Ugg like (but not uggs) at Payless. Indestructable. Fuggs, fake uggs (made to look like real uggs) fall apart right away.

Ask grandma to get your DD a pair for Christmas.

The winter she was six, DD had a pair of not-quite-Uggs. They didn't last through the winter. Last winter, when DD was 7, we got her Uggs, and she wore them constantly. Here in the winter of 8, those ame Uggs still fit, and she wears them every day. You get what you pay for.

I'm not so sure that they would be great hand-me-downs. Seems like the shearling footbed would have conformed to your older DD's foot and would be uncomfortable for the younger one.

My DD had a pair of Skeecher Ugg-like boots last winter. I think they ran around $50, which I thought was a bit high, as I don't think they were the same quality as Lands End boots for a similar price. But they made it through the winter, with almost daily wear. And she LOVED them.

I've heard rumors that you can sometimes find real Uggs at Overstock or 6pm for a decent discount.

The Old Navy ones - sprayed with protective fabric - lasted all fall and winter for my very active DD. You can't wear them in the rain or snow.

If she just wants that style boot, you can definitely find cheaper alternatives. My daughter just outgrew a pair from Children's Place that she's had for a year and a half. I replaced them with a pair that have a kitty face from Old Navy - they also have cute polka dot versions.

My 6 year old really wants an Ugg-like boot. She has a cheapo Target pair last year that she LOVED. Only thing is, they lasted for about 2 weeks and then fell apart.

I'm thinking of spending the $100 and buying her a real pair. She has a younger sister that could wear then and apparently they last a long time and can be handed down (so says a mom I was chatting to at school).

However, this is TOTALLY not my norm and I feel like others will think I'm foolish for spending this $$ on my 6 year old. I'm the opposite of a brand-whore. I hate labels.

YES, I'm WAY over-thinking this. Who cares what others think? But seriously, what are your thoughts?
