I would consider consulting a headhunter if you're looking at the higher levels as well as join professional associations in your field. Another good way to gain visibility is to present at conferences in your field--build your name recognition, network, and demonstrate your knowledge.

Regarding your boss--do not bad mouth him in any way. Practice, practice, practice benign responses

I think it's time. I work for a small place and I no longer support my boss's vision (or actually, lack of it). I also think he's making decisions that will harm our organization.

That said, I love my organization and our work. I also have a good job. I will likely be paid more at another but I have flexibility and I'd like to keep that.

What are some "best practices" in searching in a small field at the VP level?
Also, I know I can't show my disappointment in my boss, but how do I hide that? I have a terrible poker face.

Thoughts?
