I'm actually thinking of making one myself. Do you just freeze the mushrooms? I need to look into it again, but was considering just skipping them. What recipe do you use?

I made them several years ago using a Cook's Illustrated recipe and while it is time consuming it isn't especially difficult. The mushrooms should be made of marzipan, not real mushrooms

Buzz has great ones. Dairy Godmother in Del Ray does one with frozen custard inside. Yum!

Quail Creek Bakery at the Penn Quarter Farmers market had them on Thursday. I imagine he'll bring more this coming Thursday.

Fluffy thoughts in mclean has them. Great ones! Loved by even people who don't eat cake. And beautiful. I have had non dessert eaters go for third helpings, after a large Christmas Eve dinner, they are that good. By comparison the Sutton place ones were like stale Hostess products.

Buzz Bakery has a picture of one on their FB page - looks amazing. I want to buy one and I don't even celebrate Christmas!

If you don't mind crossing Key Bridge, Pattisserie Poupon in Georgetown makes wonderful ones.

I think Heidelberg Bakery on Lee Highway has them, also try Randolph's right down the street from Heidelberg.

Heidelberg is located at 2150 N. Culpepper (but really on Lee Highway & corner of Heidelberg, across the street from the KFC/Taco Bell).

Is there a bakery in NoVa where I can get a Buche de Noel? Alternatively, a good mail-order food company rec would also work.
