The princesses are annoying, but I don't think it's as big a deal as some people make it out to be.

But we love "Princess Grace" by Mary Hoffman.

I think princesses are the new DCUM juice box at soccer games. Book fairs are the next victim. Be warned.

Cinder Edna is a good one about cinderella's sister who cooks tuna casserole and gardens instead of saying woe is me. She ends up finding a less high maintenance man.

Shriek is anti princess I think since the princess turns into an ogre in the end.

I just looked cinder Edna up on amazon and it has some suggestions that look promising for similar themed books.

I sort of agree with pp. Can someone explain to me the anti-princess trend? I know, there's too much pink disney crap for sale, but still, who cares? Does anyone actually think this has a dramatic effect on kids' psyches? Because I watched The Little Mermaid 13 million times as a child and I can tell you I'm a feminist today.

"The Little Princess" by Francis Hodgson Burnett

Beautiful written, simple story. Heroine has many virtuous qualities. Her strengths are her imagination, independence, kindness to the outcasts of society, love of learning, and strength of character.

Her nobility shows through the most when she is at her most desparate circumstances, far more than when she lived in opulance and luxury.

It is a wonderful book for you to read a chapter each night with your daughter, and for her to read on her own as she grows older.

Don't bother with the movies however. Both the Shirley Temple version and the newer one are nothing like the book at all.

By far the best princess book ever.

Get ready for disappointment. On these things, the kids win. Actually the kids' friends win.

My 3 year old is totally into princesses and wants "princess stuff" for Christmas. But, her favorite "princess" book is "The Paper Bag Princess" which gives me hope. Can anyone suggest anything else, books, movies, toys, along those lines? I want to keep subverting it without her knowing it.
