Only feed it the dog food and treats its owners provided.

Says either the person who doesn't own a dog, or the really shitty dog owner.

OP, thank you for agreeing not to do it again. Some dogs "beg" when people are eating and some people have a hard time resisting. I know you're only with this dog a short time, but please do not allow the dog to beg at the table. If it puts its front legs up on the edge of your chair, you say in a firm, slightly deep voice, "NO. Down." and you gently take its front paws, and put them on the floor. Then ignore the dog.
If you feed the dog from the table, it will learn to beg you for food.

Thank you for the helpful information! I just gave her a quarter-sized piece of toast. I won't do it again.

That butter could irritate the dog's digestive system and you'll be sorry when its poop is like pancake batter and you have to bag it.

Why are you dogsitting if you don't know how to feed a dog? No, do not feed a dog buttered toast. Didn't the owners give you dog food?

don't give her buttered bread. dog food for the dog, not people food. if the dog isn't eating her dog food, that's normal - she misses her owners. just make sure fresh dog food and water are available to her. take her for long walks, and hopefully that will give her an appetite.

No human food, period.
Especially don't give it a turkey bone or anything. You could kill it.

How did the owners give you a dog without telling you what the dog should eat? Why did you agree to dogsit and allow the owners to drop the dog off without getting information about its food? Why did they even pick you to watch the dog? NO, you should not be giving the dog BUTTERED TOAST!
You should give the dog its dog food. The only exception is vaggies and in tiny quantities - like half a baby carrot once or twice a day.
You may have to sit down on the floor to encourage the dog to eat. You may even have to hold the food in your hand to encourage eating.

Dogs are often uninterested in eating when they are in new situations (and therefore nervous). I wouldn't worry if the dog skips a meal - but I wouldn't give him bread or other human food, either.
What you could do is mix a little white rice with some chicken or turkey stock/broth (just a few spoonfuls), warm it (but don't get it hot), and mix that with the dog food. That may entice the dog to eat his food, and rice and broth poses no risks for any dog.

Bread is not always a good idea, so I wouldn't encourage the dog to eat it. A few pieces won't do it, but if the dog ate the better part of the loaf by accident they could get bloat.

whatever you do, don't let her get into any chocolate. it is dangerous for dogs to ingest!

Typically dogs should only eat dog food. Does she have a dog bowl? Have you filled it? Dogs don't taste much, so she should be fine with her usual food as long as you don't give her human food or give into her begging.
Otherwise, ask the owner about human food. You don't want a barfing dog or one with diarrhea for Thanksgiving. I've taken care of a dog before that won an Oscar for begging, but if given human food he could get really sick and potentially have to go to the vet.

We are taking care of an adorable Sheltie this Thanksgiving and she's really enjoying eating some buttered toast. Is that o.k. or should we not give her any human food? The toast seems to be the only thing so far that she's expressed an interest in eating.
