My Cannon powershot is great at taking pictures of active children. I have the powershot sx30 IS. It has a zoom lens and more options than a basic point and shoot and it takes fantastic pictures. The zoom is great for shots like that one of last night's moon.
Oh, and I compared this with the Nikon equivalent and they received pretty equal reviews and their prices were both around $400. I got the Cannon because it went on sale. The camera I really wanted was about three times the price and I've been really happy with this one. I can link other pictures but I don't want to show any of my active children.
