You must not understand how nasty family can be.

If they're so bad, don't spend the holiday with them.

I said I just couldn't deal with getting more dishes dirty. Not very generous but sometimes family does bring out the worst.

Really? Wow. That's harsh.

Not for me. It's the time to be with family, drink wine, and make note of the funny/annoying/outrageous things that get said and done, to re-enact for friends later

As long as you don't mind being the subject of their later reenactments . . .

OP, I feel your pain. My MIL is incapable of talking to someone unless she's right up in your face. So when I cook, she stands in front of the sink or stove or wherever is right in the way!

Well you can always do a little pay back with emptying the dishwasher when they go to bed or get up really early if they sleep in and make as much noise around the house.

Sympathy. My FIL only likes to wash his hands in the kitchen sink during events, preferably while we are in crisis mode in the kitchen.

OP sounds like my in-laws. I think they want me to know that "they were there first in my husband's house". Drives me crazy. However, I would never leave the house with my in-laws alone in it.

Have you considered a simple "Excuse me, but I'm just trying to get the turkey brining before going to work. Can you wait about 10-15 minutes to start the coffee? That would help. Thanks."

Seriously, people want breakfast and coffee in the morning? The nerve. And in my house, my guests are expected to cater to my needs, not the other way around.

Wait . . .

So it begins . . . trying to make my brine before leaving to catch my train this morning, but wait, my father-in-law wants coffee, so my mother-in-law is at the sink, at the stove and generally in the way. Why can't she wait 15 minutes until I am done and gone to work?
