Good for them. I know they were looking at Latin's old campus - this is a better location than dealing with 16th St. traffic. 13th is much faster to get back downtown.

Traffic is one of the joys of living in DC, no matter where they would have located. North Capitol is pretty quick - for hill folks. I volunteer at the animal shelter near there - never takes me more than 15 minutes.

Have you tried going downtown from this area (Kansas Ave/Chillum Road/Blair and NC interesection..and I am not talking about starting on NC..I am talking about getting thru that bottle neck) between the hours of 7:50 and 8:40? Just curious?

I do it this commute - drive to SW. I leave between 8:00 and 8:05 daily and get to SW about 40 minutes later.

I can get to my office near Union Station is 15-20 minutes from Takoma - I leave at 7:30 via NC. Straight shot.

At least we only have to deal with the bad as hell kids from Ideal and not those that used to be at Young American Works.

Well, I live in Takoma, DC, so naturally I am thrilled! The fact that it is near private schools or other charters is not a bad thing. I would have considered CC - but it's FULL for young grades. And, there is a difference between historic-district and historic as an adjective. I would describe my 1915 house as historic, but it's not in the historic section. I had mentally prepared myself for dragging my daughter to a converted garage in Ward 5 - so this is a huge upgrade for my family.

Hmmm. I got it to work...
Sela Public Charter School Announces Facility Selection
New Hebrew language charter school to open in Ward 4 in Fall 2013

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sela Public Charter School (PCS), the District’s new Hebrew language charter school, today announced the selection of a long-term facility at 6015-6017 Chillum Place, NE in the historic Takoma, D.C. neighborhood.

“We are thrilled to be locating in Ward 4, a part of the city that truly represents Sela’s commitment to providing D.C. students from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to achieve academic excellence,” said Jason Lody, executive director of Sela PCS. “By finding a five-year home, we are one step closer to making Sela’s vision of delivering a rigorous curriculum while fostering an understanding of cultural diversity a reality.”

Sela’s Chillum Place campus is a former public charter school building that will be renovated to provide the best education in a welcoming environment that meets the needs of our elementary school students. Sela PCS is planning for multiple playground spaces and lots of natural light infused classrooms when it opens next fall.

“I gladly welcome the arrival of Sela Public Charter School to the Young America Works space. My priority is to provide and support quality educational options for our students and families,” said Ward 4 Councilmember Muriel Bowser. “I am confident that Sela will be a positive addition to the neighborhood and look forward to their contributions to Ward 4.”

Sela PCS is committed to ensuring easy access to students from all parts of the city. The 32,000 square foot facility in Ward 4 is adjacent to the Lamond-Riggs Recreational Center, and is easily accessible from both the Fort Totten (red, green and yellow lines) and Takoma (red line) metro stations via the K2 bus line. Several additional bus routes also serve the neighborhood.

“Takoma, D.C is thriving, which means more young families want to live in this historic neighborhood," said Matthew Jemal, Vice President of Douglas Development Corporation, owner of the Sela facility. "We select tenants that will contribute to the value and character of a community, and the Jemal family and Douglas Development are proud to partner with Sela Public Charter School to bring a quality charter language immersion elementary school option to Ward 4 and the District."

Sela PCS chose to locate in the Ward 4, Takoma community as it seeks to draw students from diverse socioeconomic, ethnic and racial backgrounds to enrich the school’s commitment to cultural competence and to teach students to be global citizens. The location also provides easy access to public transportation to truly serve students from all wards of D.C.

“Sela, founded in part by Takoma, D.C. residents, reached out to the community early in their application process, and we welcome the school to the neighborhood.” said Judi Jones, Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 4B07 Commissioner. “Education and smart business development have been two of my chief concerns as 4B07 ANC, and I look forward to Sela offering the children of Takoma, Lamond, Ward 4, and the District, additional language immersion charter school options for many years to come.”

Sela means "rock" or "foundation" in Hebrew, and represents the school’s commitment to providing all D.C. students with a strong foundational educational experience on which they can build their future success.

"It isn't always easy for charters to find suitable space,” said Public Charter School Board Executive Director Scott Pearson. “We congratulate Sela on finding a home for their school program."
Sela is currently accepting applications for enrollment in Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and Grade 1 for the 2013-2014 school year.

Funny how they spend things. historic Takoma is not where this school is located. Historic Takoma is much furtur up on the other side of NC Street (on the NW side). But hey, if it sells the location then so be it.

Great....so now there will be 6 schools closely located (High Roads school right down the street, then Hope Community and Ideal Academy across from that, the Roots and a 10 minute walk to Cap City). Just Great.

Wow! That's a huge space. I agree. Kudos to Sela for finding a long-term home. It's nice to be able to plan. Coming from Mt. Pleasant - this is really close. I hope that there is decent drop-off/parking.

I was hoping it would be in Columbia Heights or Logan Circle, but this is only a few stops up on the green line -and a pretty short car trip. Good pick, Sela!

Looks like they aren't going to Brookland after all However, this is very close to Cap. City's new campus - and is pretty much a straight shot to Ward 5, downtown. This Brookland family is excited - it's nice to have a charter option that can tell you where they are going to be long-term. Go Sela!
