Well, one of the problems is that the previous owners put the laundry in a front window of the house just off the powder room, not the basement. We have to move it somewhere. Can't for the life of me figure out why someone would want a washer to be visible to people walking up to the house.

Your home may not be built for a second floor laundry room and will shake. Leave it in the basement keep the tub.

I really don't care all that much personally, but we're trying to decide if we should try to figure out how to fit both a shower AND a tub into our master bathroom when we remodel. I saw plenty of houses when we were househunting without a tub, and they didn't phase me. But we do have room for both if we knock out the superfluous second vanity area. We shall see - our 1960s bathroom hasn't been touched over the years and is just completely outdated.

OP here. Should have made it clear that the tub is in a room adjacent to the master bath with a door that goes off on the main hall and one that goes to the master bath. There's plenty of room. Pre-kids I really liked to have a post-workout soak but there's no time for that now. Wonder if I'll regret it later.

I also would not purchase without a tub in the master.

Likewise there are people who would much prefer a nice, spacious shower in the Master rather than a tub shower. So if that's your choice, and you have a tub in the hall bath, I don't think it's a bad decision to put in a standalone shower.

I don't think it's an issue. We used to have both tub and shower in our previous home and we rarely used the tub. In our new home, we only have space for one, a large shower or a tub/shower combo. We decided to go with a walk-in shower, because this is what we use every day. it is especially a non-issue if you have other bathrooms in the house that have tubs should you need a soak. we use our hallway tub, but mainly for kids, it's their bathroom. For soaking, I have a deep soaking tub in the basement.

we have only one tub, so maybe for us is different. but if you are a family with young kids, you want at least one bath tub. my DH, for some reasons, takes a bath every morning. I think he is nuts. I do very fine with the shower

Agree that a laundry on the same floor as the bedrooms is nice, but I wouldn't want it in my bathroom. My personal preference is to have a tub and a shower, but I would buy a house without a tub in the master bath.

Just make sure you think about who is going to need traipse through your room to do laundry.

Shower is fine but I would be worried about losing space to the master bath when you install the bedroom laundry.

We're redoing the master bath area and I think we're going to opt to remove the giant 70s style hot tub and install a bedroom-level laundry. We won't be left with adequate space to do a nice shower and a tub. We plan to be in this house long-term and prefer to spend money on a bigger shower. There is a tub in a hall bath. Does this seem like a bad decision?
