I have remained steadily employed in two different positions in flexible (I can take whatever day off I need to, work at home when I need to, etc.) 9a - 2p jobs for the last 5 years. It has been interesting work that has added to my resume. I found these through friends. Small companies/non-profits often need help but can't pay a full time employee or are nervous to commiting to the resonsibility of promising a new employee hours. Ask everyone you know if their (or their spouses) company / organization needs any very part time help based on your skills set. In both my cases, very part time (just a couple of hours a day) ramped into more hours once I proved how valuable an employee I was.

The downside of these positions- no or low benefits, lower than market pay, and maybe no commitment to the number of hours of work they can provide you per week. I would also be prepared to bag a job quickly and professionally if it just doesn't seem to be working out.

Are the jobs advertsied as "from home" jobs? I ask just because every now and then we see threads from people asking how to apply to jobs as telecommuters from the get go. If you are competing with people who would be working in the office, then that might be it.

Also, I wouldn't leave it to the cover letter to explain. Often these aren't read if there are a lot of applicants to sift through and they use the resume to weed you out. So take the time to modify your resume.

How are you applying? What kind of companies? Are they worried that they think you're over-qualified?

I am a SAHM and applying for part time jobs, administrative, from home, not too demanding, etc.
However until 3 years ago I had jons with more responsibility, in consulting, etc. so my resumé never looks tailored to the job I am applying for. I explain in the cover letter that this is what I want now, and that I will be committed to the job in any case, but it does not seem to work.
Anybody has any ideas on how to word it, etc? I never make it to any interviews
