If you have something on them, you can try and make it like Lester's departure in American Beauty.

OP here again. Also, while cost may be some factor long term, I think they are getting rid of my group because they dont want to be in that business sector anymore, not necessarily for short term cost savings...

OP here. I think it was a delayed decision by executives, and that they either lied to the guy who is/was my boss, or changed their minds about the fate of the group. I have the same questions about how I ended up in this f-ed over position. But I am pretty confident about my information because its from inside sources who I know within the company who were looking out for me (not in the position to be decision makers, but in the know). I do think that I have a lot to contribute to the company, and I think the fact of not having me out there in the community looking for a job is also to their benefit (not talking about threatening to slander the company or anything, just that people talk, and it would set my company up better if I werent in that position right now given other stuff going on). I dont really want my old job back. What makes me mad is that I had other offers/was in other conversations, and I gave those up for this bs.

This all just sounds sketchy in a lot of ways. If it's not been publicly announced, why not go to your old department, or your connections, and say you want out of the new department now?

The folks doing the recruiting don't always know about an upcoming move like this. My company just did a huge reorganization of admin departments. We hired people a month before an announcement like this ... now they are getting laid off.

They actively recruited you to a department that is getting the axe? Dick move!

My thought which comes to mind is, how does this help your company? What's the upside for them?

I don't think they are going to be interested. One of the reasons for downsizing is to cut overhead -- not just move it from one department to another.

So, I just recently was recruited internally to move to a new position in a new and growing department. Its my second week on the job, and I just found out that my department is going to be axed. I had other external opportunities before I took this one, and was persuaded to take this one for various reasons. So now, I am screwed. The news is not public yet, i have not been told formally about the department or my job specifically.

I think/thought, that i am pretty well regarded by many people here. I have a very good mid to long-shot external job possibility but it wouldn't come through until the summer.

What I would like is to negotiate _some_ job here with my same salary and title through May or June. I have reason to believe that they could put me on various projects that exist in the org. Also the job I just transitioned out of was very external, so if I get let go, I am going back to all the external contacts I have through that last position to re-start my job search, and it would make my current company look bad. So feel that there would be benefit for both parties.

Has anyone ever done this before? Is this totally unreasonable? Tips?
