Eh, you must be foreign or someone who has gotten chewed out for calling themselves an American. But your post is right on, people in South America get upset about that. Its like they forget the A in USA means America and calling yourself American has nothing to do with claiming an entire continent.

I am a United Stasian.

Only someone who is either not well traveled or does not know a very diverse group of people would get upset about the fact that there are other Americans in the world that are not from the U.S.

Grow up, PP!!

Well, the strange thing is that some Mexicans dislike people from the US being called Americans/americanos because Mexicans are from the Americas as well. What's their resolution to this?

To call people from the US North Americans/norteamericanos. Which changes nothing.

AS a Canadian I always find it odd when people say they are from America. Same as saying from Europe or Asia or Africa - so vague! I figure they are usually from one of two camps - they are being vague on purpose to not be known to be from the USA or they are think that there are no Americans but them - the self-centric view that no one else matters.

I have never been asked that because, I think, it is so, so very clear when you look at me and hear me speak that I'm "American."

I have, however, been asked what CITY I live in. Sometimes state, too.

I say, the United States.

America is a continent, not a country.

"The US," "the states" (when in Canada), or "the United States" (usually in the native language if I say that).

Tell them what city or state - chances are they already know what country you're from! (And can deduce it from a city or state answer anyway)

USA or United States. I don't say "America" because there are many other countries that make up the Americas (North and South).

I think foreigners are very much aware that the US = USA= America. You don't need to worry too much about it.

On the contrary, I believe foreigners here have a more difficult time explaining to Americans where they're from, because some of us are just not as well-versed with other countries of the world, especially parts of Asia and Africa.

Do you say USA or US or United States or simply America?

Not really sure why I want to know but humor me please.
