This seems bizarre to me. I nanny for two babies and one started doing this at seven months and one JUST started doing it at nine months. Now they won't stop!

What exactly did the ped do to test this skill? I have four kids (including a 4 month old) and I don't recall ever having a doc ask about this. My little guy is usually trying to shove his fist in his mouth and sometimes shoves both in at the same time, but I've never noticed him clapping or clasping his hands...and this never came up at the four month visit.

Posibly your child is extremely advanced, didn't like the Ped's attitude, so refused to clap??

Thanks All. OP here. I am not super worried, but was surprised that doctor brought it up. She said that 90% of all babies bring their hands together by 4 months and was just surprised that DD was not. She brought it up twice during the conversation, which seemed like it was a big deal, and said to come back in a month if DD still was not doing this. She is usually pretty lax about developmental milestones and emphasizes that babies do things on their own time (or lat least has been at the 2 month appointment and about some other issues). It's not like she told me to panic or anything though. I was just curious if anyone else had had this issue.

I am surprised the ped would be concerned about something like this at 4 months. There is such a wide variety of normal in the first year - some kids do things late, doesn't mean it's an issue. Unless there are other concerns, I wouldn't worry about it. If he isn't doing that at 6 months? Maybe then.

Don't take offense but is it possible the ped said something like 'let's watch this' and you took it to be more of an urgent thing?

The ped. made it sounds like hand to hand was expected, but at that point DD was not even really doing fist to fist. Now she is if I encourage/help her. Ped did say it wasn't a HUGE deal, but to keep an eye on it and bring her in if she wasn't putting hands together at 5 months.

Are they supposed to be able to bring their hands together palm to palm, or just fist to fist? DD can do the latter, but not the former (same age). And she isn't rolling yet.
