Flint Hill does require sports. Don't know about opt-outs.

SSSAS has required sports in MS. In US, kids have to get a certain number of credits, but can also fulfill some of them with arts. Think you can opt out if you are involved in outside sports activity, but my DC not particularly athletic so not sure of the details.

I think Flint Hill allows opt-outs. I know someone who does something extracurricular and I think they got out of sports as a result.

Just because nobody knows about it does not mean it is not an option. My son opts out of things at his school for a dyslexic tutor to work with him but nobody knows about it. I guess we could have picked sports - if I wanted him to never talk to me again.

I'm pretty sure NCS does allow opt outs in middle school for kids who make a substantial commitment outside of school. NCS also has non-team sport options available, like yoga or personal fitness. I have a DD at NCS who is definitely not an athlete. but i can think of at least one of here classmates who has been doing independent PE since 7th grade.

Not quite accurate on Sidwell. They do allow a very few independent studies but the student has to be a fairly high level in their sort. The PE requirement if an independent study is not approved is not onerous, though -- I believe it amounts to 2 class periods a week and there's a before-school option if they are training for their own sport after school. NCS is similar to Sidwell; students can apply for independent study (I think it is granted more at NCS, but the alternate PE requirement is more time consuming than Sidwell's). Maret gives out independent study status liberally.
The above is talking about Upper School. For middle school, PE/Sports is within the school day at Sidwell and NCS so they don't allow opt-outs at the middle school level as I recall. Best to ask at each school as even the parent community doesn't know all the wrinkles.

I don't think this is correct. School allows "independent study" programs for athletics outside of school. Call to ask about this.

My 7th grader is definitely not an athlete, but has dabbled in a few sports and it's required, it's required. I'm sure she won't be the only uncoordinated kid there.
My 5th grader is the gymnast, and does not have time for another sport. There is barely time for homework and sleeping as it is.
