OP here to follow up. I took the advice of the PP who suggested floating the idea. She said she'd love to, and we're getting together for coffee after Thanksgiving. So I'm glad I asked, and I'm excited to have a potential new friend! Thanks all.

I agree on trying to set up a coffee date and watching her signs. If you are the same age & lifestyle, maybe you'll be good friends. I teach private lessons and often have a hard time getting away when lessons end, so I'd encourage you to pursue a separate context friendship, but to leave her home promptly when the lesson ends. I have clients I see professionally and personally, but I hate when someone wants to blur the two.

I wouldn't think that's weird. Good friends are harder to find as we age, so if you click with someone, I say pursue the friendship. Someone has to make the first move.

DD started piano lessons around 6 months ago and takes lessons at the teacher's house. For a few months now, after each lesson her teacher and I have been chatting a lot socially--often for a good 20-30 minutes afterwards, so we've already had some good conversations, and we've really hit it off. If we'd met in a different context I'm sure we'd already be getting to be friends, but I haven't wanted to invite her to coffee or to our house or anything because part of me feels like it's weird and a blurring of boundaries--although on the other hand, it's not like she's her classroom teacher. So would it be strange or is it fine and I'm over-thinking this?
