No way I'd let an 11 yo bike across town alone.
And with all metro's breakdowns, taking that to school regularly is dicey, imo.

OMG this can't be a serious problem in this city that is promoting biking. That's your option. What, probably a parent who prides themselves in having a diverse play group for their snowflake. Real city, real world and REALLY!!

My sister lives in another state and they actually do have a taxi service for kids there. I'm surprised nothing like that has popped up around here.

Give OP a break. Transportation safety is hardly a trivial issue.

OP, double check the bus schedules for the commute. Many kids in our MS take metrobus because it's more reliable than metro. Drivers on our route keep an eye on the kids and know school staff. Circulator bus is good because of frequency.

A longer commute by bus might be worth saving the hassle of relying on the schedule of a sitter or older student who may not have a reliable backup.

I found a sitter who drove. Had 2 in one year. Not a great situation and necessary for our lives.

I used a teenager found on the neighborhood list serve to take my child of about this age on metro last school year. He learned enough to go independently this year.

I tried to find a "driver" and found that to be more difficult to locate than someone to ride metro along with my DC.

Is your child comfortable with riding the metro alone? Or, is it a fear that you have? If you have a mature 6th grader who is open to traveling alone, then I would do a few dry runs with the child and then let them try it on their own one morning. They might just surprise you. I have a friend who reluctantly did this with her 6th grader and now is ecstatic that she has freed up an hour in her day.

Consider hiring a girl friday to do this - ask on your local listserv. I have a good friend who did exactly this sort of thing for a couple of years until she finally decided to go back to 9-5 work.

Does anyone use a taxi service (or high school or college kid/ sitter) to get their kid to an OOB or charter school? If it's a service, which one? I'm thinking about a child who would be in 6th grade; I'm not comfortable with him on the metro alone yet.
