MD/Consultant (with lots of out of town travel) household.

When the kids were young, we did nanny and daycare. It was expensive but the only way we could get it to work.

Now that the kids are older, we trade favors with other families since there are a lot of us with this type of crazy schedule.

Inova has a daycare, but you must be an employee to use it (and the wait list is usually about a year).

I didn't ask for sympathy, I asked what others do in the situation. Thanks for the snarky remark, I certainly don't get my fill of snarkiness being surrounded by mostly women at work so I thank you for helping to meet my quota for the week. Maybe I will have to consider a change of scenery and look at positions at VHH. Also going to start looking for a reliable morning nanny, thanks for all the PRODUCTIVE feedback, glad that others have faced the same challenge and found workable solutions.

exactly the same situation for us

We both report to work at 7 am. Nanny comes to the house at 6:30 for two drop offs.

OP, several of my friends in a similar situation drop their kids off at an "at home" daycare and they either ride the bus to school from that daycare house, or the daycare mom drives them to school with their child who goes to the same school.
Or, a SAHM watches their kid in the morning before school and they get on the bus from there (I am totally doing this when my kids go to school!
Maybe something along those lines would work? You could ask around the school and/or daycare, it might be worth it to a mom that already takes her kid there to earn a little extra money to drive your child

It's really irritating that there are no in-hospital day care centers for staff, especially for those of us that work evening/night shifts. Most docs I know who have kids either leave them with family or hire a full time nanny.

Btw, we are in NW dc (16th street heights) with both reverse commuting to silver spring and Rockville.

OP here. 7am drop off would work for us. And 6 or 6:30pm is plenty of coverage as long as DH is not out of town. I've been having a hard time finding someone for the early morning time since I don't work m-f. Currently we have 5 yo in dcps and the earliest we can drop her off is 8:15 so with me leaving around 6am its been a scheduling nightmare to get someone to cover that. Is there a better way to find reliable but not everyday early morning nannies? Care to give up the name of your daycare? Not even sure if it is an option based on our commutes but nice to know there is maybe some options.

Our daycare opens at 7AM and closes at 6PM. It has an extended car option until 6:30PM. What hours are you looking for?

Do you just need somewhat earlier hours, or you need the flexibility to cover late nights, shifting schedules, etc? I know a few people who had kids while both parents were residents and they all ended up with nanny arrangements because nothing else was flexible enough.

Why are there no daycare options that cater to the healthcare industry? Yes, my husband has a somewhat normal 9-5 but he also travels and has early meetings that would require a before 8am drop off time. We moved from Richmond,VA where there seemed to be a few if not several that catered to the doctor/nurse population. We are expecting baby#2 in spring and my current search has me believe there is no other option besides nanny share with hopefully another family in the same predicament. Anyone else have this issue?
