This. But depending on the kid I'd give him the option: (1) you can stay up late now to do it; or (2) turn it in a day late (with a note from me). He's old enough to make those types of decisions, and with my son at least, he'd be mortified to turn in homework a day late. So I'd give him the option of decreasing or preventing a stressful situation.

Just send in a note saying that he'll turn it in the next day. This is only first grade - the teachers don't care about homework being a day late.

No time in the mornings as he gets up at 6:30 b/c bus comes at 7:40 (20 minute drive to bus pick up for us). I just let him do it. In the future though, should I make him take it back incomplete or allow him to do it (I felt bad this time b/c I knew he had it and I honestly forgot).

This has to be a joke. Someone coming on here asking for others to make a simple decision? Give me a break. What kind of parent are you?

I'm sorry. You must be perfect. Go away asshole.

If he's in first, it's your responsibility to remember and be sure he has a routine. As far as what to do, I say if he got up and asked to do it, it would likely ruin his day more to skip it than to lose the sleep from doing it so let him do it. And, it's a good lesson - you can't just forget about your responsibilities because if you do, there are consequences.
