Yes, Eastern Capitol Hill is very diverse.

I swear to God, you people here will take any chance to be assholes who live in a bubble. And you're proud of it is the sad thing. You're proud that you live in such a superior neighborhood that people would come there to trick or treat, and then you're proud that you look down on them for doing so. Heaven Forbid "outsiders" come to your neighborhood. It is pathetic that on a board predominantly contributed to by parents that so many of the posters here would make a children's holiday all about them. MY neighborhood, MY candy, if I've never seen you you are not good enough to be the beneficiary of my very special candy. It must be terrible to be the kind of person who would think this way. I hope you don't drive to other neighborhoods known for their awesome Christmas light displays at Christmastime. Cause you know, the people in that neighborhood put in a lot of effort for THEIR families, not for intruders to come look at their hard work.

You are EXACTLY what is WRONG with our country today, PP. You are looking to pick a fight based on class/economics and love calling out "elitism". You are a PIG, a greedy, nasty PIG, and you are teaching your children the absolutely wrong thing. I am not "proud" at all but I do work very, very hard (and studied very, very hard in school) to provide a nice life for my family and I do not appreciate people like you bringing your greedy, poorly mannered and low morals promoting self into my sweet, kind, open hearted neighborhood to grab as much candy as you can. Its gross and PIGGY.

Exception being you.

10:33 - ITA. The grabby greedy ones are not grateful and they tend to ruin it for everyone. Many are over this.

Driving your child to another neighborhood to t-o-t is obnoxious and greedy. Lots of people who do that are NOT coming from unsafe neighborhoods, they just want to go to neighborhoods where the t-o-t'ing is "easier" because houses are closer together or in area where they think the houses will have "better" candy because it is more affluent. This is not race based, you see it in the upper crusty areas of all neighborhoods. Halloween is not suppossed to be a greedy free-for-all. Right of passge and childhood memories, sure, but in your own neighborhood if you want to really do it the traditional and all-American way.

The caveat is, if you do indeed live in a dangerous or unfriendly to t-o-t'ing neighborhood than, by all means, come on over! but dont do it just for the candy which is what we are blantantly seeing (and I do not live on Capital Hill or in G'town).

I have no problem with parents from not-so-great neighborhoods taking their kids to neighborhoods where they can safely trick or treat. In our society, it's an important rite of childhood.

OP, you had to know you would get flamed for this. Is it really any skin off your nose to smile and give a piece of candy or two to a kid from a neighborhood that isn't as nice as yours?

If you were in those parents' shoes, wouldn't you be at least tempted to take your kids to another neighborhood to trick or treat? I know I would.

Those parents are out making memories with their kids, and they had to go out of their way to do it.

You do realize you live about 3 blocks from a public housing project, right? Those were your neighbors, OP.

You can't be serious, OP. "Where do they come from?" Do you think they are being flown in from the west coast or something? They probably came in to go to Hilloween, a great community event, and then went trick or treating in the surrounding neighborhoods. You think you get a lot of ToTers-- try going down East Capitol. We used to live in an English basement on East Capitol, and we'd team up with our landlord and give out over 1000 pieces of candy every Halloween, and there were STILL kids who were out after we'd run out. It's a fun atmosphere. Not really surprising that folks from other neighborhoods would come out to enjoy it.

OP if it bothers you so much, why don't you just turn out the lights and hide under your covers and eat all of your candy.

If by "not from around here" you mean black ... You may be surprised to know that capitol hill is surrounded by black people in easy walking distance! Omg! Some black people even live in the neighborhood!

A lot of kids who live in not-great t-o-t areas go to neighborhoods like G-town and Capital Hill where there are a lot of houses close together and/or where its safer to walk around at night.

We live near Marion Park on Capitol Hill - there were hordes of trick or treaters last night, and I would guess 95% of them do not live in the (nearby) neighborhood. Where do they come from?
