I have not painted tile but the previous owners of our home did, and I hate them for it! You will not be able to scrub the tile properly -- will have to use a soft sponge and no Comet, etc. It held up for 4 years but that was with being really careful with it, and that is about the limit I think.

Liquid de-glosser, then *bonding* primer, the the highest quality paint you can afford (ideally a water-borne oil paint). Don't do it if water is arond. Don't do it on floors.

We considered it, but after quite a bit of research we decided against it because it is hard to do well and often chips and peels, even under the best of circumstances.

Its not that hard, this is a DIY project. Painting is just going to be a mess when it peals and in the future you will eventually get rid of it.

how is it any different than painting the wall back there? the whole area will be painted no just the individual tile.

the color I am doing is called wood ash from BM. I had a colorist from Potomac Paint pick it out when she picked colors for the rest of my house. My kitchen is very beige and the beige has lots of pink undertones, in particular the backsplash tile had a lot of pink to it, hence the painting over it. Ok this post is giving me the motivation to finally get it done! I;ve had the paint for 9 months now. I keep putting it off.

Can you do this on ceramic floors?

I have not done it yet, but have all the supplies and have been planning on doing it.

I read somewhere to first clean the tile really well and co over with sandpaper if it is really smooth. i also read to use adhesion primer from sherwin williams. So I have that. Just need to get around to that actual painting.
