I know a co-worker used the program starting in 3rd grade. Her kids were behind when they started but are doing well now in an IB program based highschool. I would say that it has a very formal structure that a lot of parents are comfortable with. There seems to be a bias towards more group led team based learning environments in upper northwest DC. I think a lot depends on what your expectations are about the school.

Elite h.s./private prep schools recruit from schools like KIPP to get high achieving, minority students. Win, win for all: the students go on full scholarship and get a first rate education and the school's get excellent students that expand their diversity. NP here. I have heard (on the street not first hand) that many who go through KIPP are seriously considered for elite private HS. I think it's because of the work habits KIPP instills in its students. It's not a place for everyone though. I can be a rather rigid experience for children who are not used to a highly structured program. This last part I did learn from talking to parents. Some parents embrace the structure. Some found it stifling for their children. YMMV

No, but I just met a woman who's daughter is a Sophmore at Exeter who came from KIPP. Not bad.
