Yup, 140-year-old house here and we have no first floor closets, either.

I live in a 101-year old house.

I wish I had closets. On the first floor, guess how many closets there are? I'll wait while you think about this. ...

....

....

Okay, ready? None. There is not a single closet on the entire first floor.

I love having a big laundry room on the same floor as the bedrooms, two sinks in the kitchen, and a mudroom.

Childrens' bedrooms as small as possible. A separate bedroom is valuable, but the excess space just leads to extra clutter and mess.

DH and I both grew up in homes with laundry chutes, and love this feature!

I'd say wood floors and tile throughout -- no wall-to-wall carpet anywhere. Carpet gets dirty...

I loved having a spice cabinet in my last house. It was a skinny cabinet on the bottom right next to the stove. It pulled out and there were all the spices.

For me, these are things I wish I had:

-Grout-free tile for kitchen and bathroom floors. Could be a large tile, with flat edge (not pillow-edge) with very little grout, sealed well. Right now I had to clean/seal a lot of tile floors to look clean.

-Bathtub surround that is made of just a single piece of molded plastic As much as I like the look of real-tiled tub and shower surrounds, its not worth it to me for cleaning.

-Eliminate unnecessary hallway space Its just an extra space to clean.
